The Thistle Amongst the Lilies is the culmination of over 15 years of composing by Montreal piper
Jeff McCarthy. In his many years of playing for The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada, he has been inspired by events or people (or just for the fun of it) to compose a few "guid wee choons".

In collaboration with a few old friends, composers from the Montreal piping community, he has put together a collection which is "old country" in intent but fresh in it's addition of tunes, old and new, to the repertoire of Scotland's most famous national instrument.

The Thistle Amongst the Lilies has 52 pages, is spiral bound with a full color laminated cover and contains 40 tunes, covering the full range of light music. The tunes are set up on the page in "landscape" style, which makes it easy to set the book up on a music stand to practice with.

This book is all you need to get your fingers moving! This collection of exercises is a methodically structured means of learning the ABCs of piping technique. It has a large section on timing and general music theory, which most newcomers need if they have never played an instrument before. It basically takes you through simple and compound time counting exercises which is the framework for very simple note changing exercises. Once we introduce gracenotes, there is really no turning back! I have been gradually developing this book over 10 years while teaching my students. Many of the exercises are standard, many are new.
