April 2009: today has seen a few fixes to the site, adjustment of some info and the addition of a PayPal purchasing option for the purchase of The Piper's Companion, Le Compagnon du Cornemuseur and The Thistle Amongst the Lilies. I am also working on a complete overhaul of the site, in the goal of updating certain areas, and rendering the color schemes a little less busy! Yes, I recognize that reading text over tartan backgrounds can be a bit brutal at times.

August 2008: I am a bit pressed for time, but it should be said that my  first music collection of tunes, entitled "The Thistle Amongst the Lilies", is ready for purchase. For now it is best to shoot me an e-mail for ordering info. Have a great summer and happy piping.

June 2008: Aha it is "D-Day", June 6th and here I am with another quick update. The summer is upon us and I am busy at working on some tunes for my 6A Qualification for music. I will be buzzing around Montreal doing gigs, before I go on a training block in Borden...

Anyhow I have embedded some stuff I have done on YouTube, I hope you enjoy it. There is stuff from last year's Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, as well as a wedding I played at (hint hint) and a school video I helped my friend make. Please leave a comment or two, it is always appreciated.

I will admit I have been most negligent when it comes to getting my music book printed. Good news is though, I have a printer, and a price... and now I just have to do some last minute checks and edits to ensure that this baby is print worthy. As soon as this thing is going it will be posted here of course.

November 2007: Well here I am on another Basic Military Qualification as an instructor. In my spare time I am working frantically on fixing up the music book, putting the finishing touches on it and looking for a printer that will give me what I want for the price I want. I have played the tunes through a few times now, and I must say it is not sounding bad at all. I played for a variety of Remembrance Events once again, and the Saint Andrew's Ball last weekend. Happy Saint Andrew's Day to all! Slainte Mhath.

June 2007: busy times, crazy times. I spent the last couple of months as an instructor on a Basic Military Qualification for the Army. Basically I was teaching recruits Army stuff. Due to this I have been a bit slow in getting the ball rolling with respect to the new collection of tunes! But in due time this project will get off the ground. I am now gearing up to go play at the Halifax Tattoo for the second time! The last time I was there was in 2002, so it should be exciting to be back in Hali, where the trees are known to rain, and the partying never stops.

January 2007:  Well several months have passed, and I must say I can't believe how time flies. I am working on revamping the website, including a section that is devoted specifically to Ceol Méirleach~Marauder Music. This is the name of my bagpipe music publishing house that I am kicking off in the near future. The Piper's Companion has sold literally dozens of copies now, in English and in French. Thanks to those who have used this book... many rely upon it to keep up their daily practice routine. It also will undergo a revision in the near future, it is definitely on my list of things to do.

Happy Robbie Burns Day! Should auld acquaintance be forgot... :-)

Paypal options will soon be available for ordering a copy of The Piper's Companion. More on that to come in future updates.

The arrival of the Ceol Méirleach~Marauder Music home page will also coincide with a collection of tunes that I have been working on for ages now... I have a printer, now it is just a matter of handling the layout of the collection.

Another branch from my main site will be devoted to electronic music! I was playing around with loops and samples on my Palm TX last summer, and wow! The fun you can have when you have the right tools.

July 2006 : July 22nd was a sad day for the Black Watch of Canada, and the nation. A sad fact of war or of any kind of UN or NATO mission is that people get injured, or worse, killed. Corporal Jason Patrick Warren was one of ours; a great lad, full of life and laughter. He was also a great soldier, on his second tour. He  will be missed. My condolences to his family and friends. His comrades from the Unit  will certainly miss him!

Thank You Jason. Rest In Peace.

Cpl Jason Patrick Warren

June 2006 : a lot has happened since I last put a few words here. Hmmm where to start...

Just around Christmas we were shocked to hear of the passing of Gordon Duncan. Needless to say this piper was inspirational to us all. He will be sorely missed. Get your Gordon Duncan CDs now...Just for Seamus, The Circular Breathe and Thunderstruck. All are brilliant.

On the Regimental Birthday Parade in January, I received my promotion to Master Corporal.

The winter for me was a rough one...I am  the victim of a respiratory condition known as sleep apnea, which indeed means I snore like a chainsaw, but I went to a sleep clinic and I now have a lifeline. The CPAP machine I use at night helps me doze, and I wake up  feeling quite refreshed and ready for action. Sleep apnea sucks. It really does a number on your energy level, and there is a host of potential problems if you let it continue untreated. 3 cheers for my good wife who encouraged me to go get checked out.

The band is competing his summer at  a few games, come check us out. For info see the Black Watch P&D website.

5 new tunes in the works, I think the collection will have a total 75 tunes not long from now.

December 2005 : needless to say there has been a lot going on, other wise I would be here more often fixing things. With 2 little kiddies in the house it is hard to find the time to come in here and update. Halfway through September we went to play at Chalmers Church in Gould. The band held the Ceilidh in October, and then we got revved up for Remembrance Day activities.

November 11th I finally received  my Canadian Decoration... someone finally got them to melt down the loonies and found someone sober enough to engrave my name on the edge without mucking it up.

On December 5th, or thereabouts, my paperwork came in for my promotion to Master Corporal. So after many a year as a Corporal, I am moving up the ladder a wee bit, and I think that my many years of experience in the band will certainly be an asset to all who are members of the Pipes & Drums. Can the rank of Sergeant be that far off? Well I have  a lot of work to do ladies and gents... stay tuned.

July 2005 : things have been very interesting as of late. I completed my Primary Leadership Qualification for the CF in March, then took off to Holland for the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of Europe. We marched and played for 3 weeks. We marched many a kilometre and drank many a Heineken

I came back home to play at the McGill Convocations, and then at the end of May my wife was having a few minor complications in her pregnancy. So I spent a few weeks at home with my daughter who was at the time 2 yrs. old! We did a few gigs together, including playing at a friend's cocktail party up in Westmount! She seems to be getting used to the idea that her Daddy plays a very loud instrument, which is good.

My son was born on June 23rd, and so it looks like I will be able to go play at celebrations for the 100th anniversary of Alberta's joining the Confederation. Included in this one week event is a Tattoo in Edmonton!

March 2005 : well it has been a while since there has been an update and there are some good reasons for that. Between having a 20-month old wee sprog running around the house, and a leadership course for the military, my hands have been quite full as of Fall of 2004. I missed all kinds of events due to this course but now it is all but over so I can say it was well worth the trouble. What's more the holidays have come and gone, so now I have a little more free time to attend to other matters. Like updating my website!

A Tribute to Martyn Bennett

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Martyn Bennett on January 30th, 2005. His music really made a profound effect on me. You will notice his site is in my links section. My tribute to him is as follows;
I first met Martyn and his mother at the first Gould Festival of Scottish Traditions. This soft spoken lad could play a wicked fiddle, the sweetest airs on the flute, and toe-tapping reels on the great pipe. He was not a piper though, or so he said, but "an instrumentalist".

Well for us who do play the pipes, I must say that it is hard not to respect the abilities of this lad; despite his talents being spread to so many disciplines.

To me he was a shining star, one that shone brighter than many. I had met him only 3 or 4 times. To me his music was something that was re-defining the traditional idiom, and so I just had to get all of his CDs.

I am glad to know Martyn is no longer suffering, and offer my deepest sympathies to Margaret, Kirsten and family. We are saddened to hear of Martyn's passing.

Please visit Martyn's website to learn of the Martyn Bennett Trust.

Exercise Books Available

In September 2002, my tutor book, The Piper's Companion was made available, and now I am proud to announce that a French version is finally available and ready for all up and coming students. It is called Le Compagnon du Cornemuseur and it is on sale now! The book is full of exercises for pipers of all levels; it is not to be missed. If you want a copy just contact me.

Collection of Pipe Montreal Music in the Works Completed!

There has been some gradual progress made with respect to  the completion of my first collection of tunes. I don't sit down with the aim of composing a tune a day. These things take time. Some musical ideas I have sit and simmer for a while until I decide they are ready to be cooked up. I am now carrying a small tape recorder with me and whenever something comes to mind I start to sing into that little machine. If you see me at a bus stop cantering into my hand don't mistake me for some kind of lunatic!

I have over 50 tunes under my belt,  and I am looking into getting it published. There are already a few tunes in there that have turned some ears, so I can't wait to reach that magic number. If there are any local pipers that have a tune or two that they would like to share and possibly have it published, please contact me for information. I have actually already received several nice tunes from some friends that used to play in the Black Watch.

The nice thing about this book is that there are some tunes from other composers from the Montreal area or people that lived in the city for a period of time. Friends from my years of piping in  Montreal. More on them to follow...

As for the title of the collection, I actually have a name in mind, but I will be keeping that a secret for a while yet... ;-)

Stay tuned for more news...
